Here is another video from the red carpet at the premiere of Fierce People in LA. In this one, however, the reporter asks Anton Yelchin about his role of Chekov in Star Trek and another new film of his called Middle of Nowhere.

Download movies in 15 seconds?

The idea of downloading movies to buy or rent off the internet (legally, of course) has taken off but isn't zooming along at lightning speed. Why? Because, well, most people don't have lightning fast internet connections. Is there another alternative to making the trip to Blockbuster, checking the mailbox for Netflix, or downloading off the 'net? There just may be, from a company called Porto.

"Porto's kiosks, which will be installed in retail locations all over Galway, allow consumers to download movies to a flash memory card in just 15 seconds (at a rate of 1.5 gigabytes per second). The so-called "movie key" can then be plugged into the USB port of a computer, television monitor or mobile screen for viewing on the go or in the home," according to an article in The Hollywood Reporter.

Ireland gets a shot at this first, but could we see a service like this anytime soon in the US? Kiosks popping up like telephone booths (remember them) everywhere you turn?

"Four-Day Film School" at SXSW 2008

Few things fascinate me as much as the art of filmmaking. And judging from the questions I'm asked and the conversations in which I find myself, the same goes for most film buffs too. Especially for those who love indies, the process of getting a film from brain to screen is a long and complicated one. That's why I was excited when I heard that the SXSW Film Festival had put together a "Four-Day Film School."

It will take place as part of the 2008 SXSW Film Conference panel programs. "On each of the four days of the SXSW Film Conference, badgeholders are invited to attend workshop sessions geared towards the specific details of getting a film from pre-production to post-production, and beyond," says festival head Matt Dentler.

Here is the tentative schedule, with speakers to be announced later:

SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 2008

Producing Mentor Session
"Scripts for Docs and Narratives" Mini-Meeting
Cinematographer Mentor Session
"Directing Actors" Mini-Meeting
Casting Director Mentor Session

SUNDAY, MARCH 9, 2008

NEW "Black Irish" site, stills, production notes

black irishOn Monday we posted a new official trailer and poster for Brad Gann's Black Irish.

There is now a brand new official site for the film, which hits theaters in New York and Boston on September 28. In addition to material which was on a previous site, there are some new high resolution stills as well as production notes available to download.

The making of BLACK IRISH has been quite a journey for me, starting from the seed of an idea twelve or so years ago to its incarnation as a film today. The process of birth is an apt metaphor for this, and I suppose, most films: a long period of gestation, followed by a relatively brief but intense period of labor, the actual production being both painful and exhilarating. Exhilarating in the sense of getting the opportunity to work with such gifted actors as Michael Angarano, Brendan Gleeson, Melissa Leo, Tom Guiry and Emily VanCamp, who breathed such life, dimension, pathos and love into characters that had existed merely in my head and on the page. -- Writer/director Brad Gann

Hopefully this film will show up at a theater near you. And if not, it's worth making the trip.

2008 SXSW Film Festival site up and running

We attended over 15 festivals since the beginning of 2006, but few matched the excitement and rock & roll atmosphere of the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. We covered both the 2006 and 2007 festivals, and although the 2008 edition doesn't get underway until March, things are rolling down there in the Lone Star State.

The 2008 SXSW Film Festival official site is up and running, and you can now read the the first of several SXSW Film Festival brochures and magazines online.

Of course, if you plan on attending, remember that the sooner you get your badge the more you'll save. Hotels sell out fast too. March will be here before you know it!

"Billy the Kid" wins Best Documentary at Edinburgh

Billy the Kid was our #1 Top Pick from this year's SXSW Film festival -- the first time we've selected a documentary for that spot.

Now Jennifer Venditti's Billy the Kid has won the Jury Award for Best Documentary at the Edinburgh Film Festival in Scotland. Earlier it won the same prize at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

Is it too early to talk about Oscar buzz? Apparently not, as many are doing just that on this last Monday before Labor Day. Count us in.

Pictures from "The Forbidden Kingdom" wrap party

As we posted below, The Forbidden Kingdom wrapped on August 23. That night a party was held at the official hotel in Hengdian. As we predicted, it was off the hook.

Jackie posted a slew of pictures from the party on his blog.

The American cast members and crew, including star Michael Angarano, will no doubt come home to a well-deserved vacation.

Meanwhile, Angarano has two films opening in the next 6 weeks: Black Irish on September 28 in select cities and The Final Season in wide release on October 12.

"My Mom's New Boyfriend" RELEASE DATE

The team behind Local Color, one of our Top Picks of the past year, headed back to the New Orleans area last year to shoot a romantic comedy. Starring Antonio Banderas, Meg Ryan, Colin Hanks, Selma Blair, and Trevor Morgan (also of Local Color), the George Gallo-directed film was originally titled Homeland Security, and we've reported on it here. Other names were tested, including Chasing Marty, My Mom's New Boyfriend, and More Than You Know.

Now a name has been chosen, along with a distribution deal and release date. The film will be titled My Mom's New Boyfriend and has been picked up for US theatrical distribution by Romar Entertainment. Release has been set for February 22. 2008.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has secured the home video rights.

New Elijah Wood project...or something

I've been struggling to come up with a snappy (or even serious) intro to this fine piece of work(?) but even my journalistic sensibilities won't allow me to come up with anything suitable.

So I guess you can write your own caption.

"The Forbidden Kingdom" has wrapped (finally)

The Forbidden Kingdom has finally wrapped after close to 5 months of shooting.

"The final shot of The Forbidden Kingdom was filmed on the afternoon of August 23rd at the Hengdian Studios, China, according to Jackie Chan's blog. "The movie, which stars Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Li Bing Bing, Michael Angarano, Crystal Liu, and Collin Chau, will move into post-production until its release next year. Jackie aggravated an old back injury while filming earlier in the week, but is recovering nicely."

Considering all the parties and dinners they had during shooting, you know they are going to have one BIG wrap party for sure (if it's not already over). I'm willing to bet we'll see some pictures soon!

Produced by Casey Silver, The Forbidden Kingdom was directed by Rob Minkoff from a John Fusco script. The film is being released in the US jointly by Lionsgate and The Weinstein Company on April 18, 2008.

"3:10 to Yuma" review in Variety

More Yuma news...

Variety, arguably the industry bible whose reviews carry a lot of weight, has reviewed the film. Not known for being overwhelmingly glowing, the review is quite uncharacteristically positive.

"3:10 to Yuma" is a tense, rugged redo of a film that was pretty good the first time around. Reinforced by a strong central premise, alert performances, a realistic view of the developing Old West and a satisfying dimensionality in its shadings of good and evil, James Mangold's remake walks a fine line in retaining many of the original's qualities while smartly shaking things up a bit. A Western these days needs to be more than a solid, unfussy programmer to break out of the pack commercially, but this Lionsgate release should be able to generate moderately good theatrical returns prior to a solid home entertainment life, where casual viewer curiosity will be well rewarded.

Just a caution: Variety reviews are typically spoiler-filled, so read the rest with care.

"Speed Racer" REVIEW

"Huh" you say?

I know, I know. It's not even done yet. It won't be released until May 9, 2008.

The bad news is, someone got ahold of the script and decided to review IT and post it online. The good news is, this shows how high an interest there is in the film. The even better news is, it's a good review.

Check it out at Ain't It Cool News.

snow angelsWe attended the World Premiere of David Gordon Green's Snow Angels at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and it was our #1 Top Pick. Starring Sam Rockwell, Kate Beckinsale, Michael Angarano, and Olivia Thirlby, the film was picked up by Warner Independent Pictures and we've been eagerly awaiting release news.

Now both Variety and Box Office Mojo are listing March 7, 2008 as the release date for Snow Angels. This is actually earlier than the "next spring" which we were told after it screened in Brooklyn a few months ago.

"Fierce People" locations + other release news

Here is some updated release information on a handful of films we've been following. Several of these films have had multiple release date changes so we're keeping our fingers crossed. A good deal of the details below are new.

3:10 to Yuma will open September 7 in 2500+ locations. That puts it beyond "wide" release into "saturation."

The Jane Austen Book Club will open September 21 exclusively in NY and LA. No running time yet.

Trade has come in with a final running time of 119 minutes and will open September 21 in major markets.

The Forbidden Kingdom is scheduled to be released April 18, 2008 at 1750+ locations.

Speed Racer will be released May 9, 2008 at 3150+ locations.

Finally (and we do mean finally, for this film which was shot 3 1/2 years ago) Fierce People will open in the following cities on September 7:

Atlanta
Boston
Chicago
Dallas
Houston
Los Angeles
New York City
Philadelphia
San Francisco
Washington DC

"Charlie Bartlett" new release date?

We loved Charlie Bartlett when it premiered at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival. It was one of our Top Picks. Then it was pulled from its scheduled August 3 release date. MGM cited "today's overwhelmingly competitive market" and planned to reschedule. At recent screenings, reps for the film talked about a 2008 release.

This afternoon, I received the following from the filmmakers:

"Just wanted to let you know that a new release date will be announced any day now, so just hang in there."

Now, according to Box Office Mojo, Charlie Bartlett will be out February 1, 2008.

We'll see if that's correct.

"Speed Racer" video game, Yelchin cast in "Star Trek"

As we headed off to bed, a couple of items caught our eye in the just-out Hollywood Reporter:

The Speed Racer video game will come out May 9, the same date that the film is released in the U.S.

The "Speed" game is being developed for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment by New Zealand-based Sidhe Interactive and will first be released for the Nintendo Wii and portable DS system. A third configuration, for the Sony PlayStation 2, will be timed to reach shelves with the DVD release of the Warner Bros. Pictures film.

Also being reported today:

Anton Yelchin "is in negotiations to play Pavel Chekov, the Russian-born navigator of the USS Enterprise under the command of James T. Kir."

They are basically calling it a done deal.
